THE BEATLES

THE BEATLES FLICKER RINGS UNCUT SHEET: 1964, Ex/M with one small 3/8 inch crease on the lower right corner of the sheet, size roughly 8.25 by 8.5 inches, semi-glossy light weight card stock, blank back, this was produced for gumball machine and counter sale flicker (some say flasher) rings during the initial Beatles invasion in 1964. The images are head shots of Ringo, George, Paul, and John with "I'm (name) - Beatles" overlaid. When the ring was assembled, a lenticular piece of plastic placed over this image produced the flicker change effect of, for example, "I'm Ringo - Beatles" with Ringo's face. When cut, this sheet would produce 192 flicker ring images, or 48 copies of The Beatles as a group. Outside the red background image area of the Fab Four that makes up the majority of this sheet are the registration marks for the printer and white borders on the left and top sides. The rings are a relatively prized find, but locating an uncut sheet of ring images is even more of a rarity. Plus, for those of you who need the reassurance, a COA from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guaranteeing this is authentic is included. See sheet  $400

The set features a blend of studio tracks and radio broadcasts, with many of the latter previously unavailable on vinyl. There is a 16 page spiral bound introduction to Miller and his band is inside. MONKEE BUSINESS PICTURE DISC: Rhino Records RNLP-701, Released November 1982, First Pressing (not the RE-1 Reissue from 1986), Die-cut front cover that shows the color Side 1 of the album. Side 2 is an early B&W shot of The Monkees. The vinyl is NM (played once, taped, and stored away) and the jacket is in EX condition. This is a cut-out copy, so the lower front right corner of the jacket is clipped, but only blank space is gone; the "Rhino Records RNLP 701" print is all visible. The original clear plastic sleeve is still on the record. The album includes 12 rare (at the time) songs. They are: Porpoise Song (mono single mix), Star Collector (stereo), It’s Nice To Be With You (mono), D.W. Washburn (wide stereo), Steam Engine (TV mono mix), Tema Dei Monkees (original Italian long single version - unreleased on CD), Pleasant Valley Sunday (mono single mix), What Am I Doing Hangin’ Round (stereo with reversed channels), She Hangs Out (mono, withdrawn first single version), Love To Love (mono, first U.S. release), Someday Man (stereo), Goin’ Down (mono, unreleased long version). The 1986 reissue contains alternate versions of 10 of these songs. Brief, but accurate, song liner notes are on the back cover. While the vinyl is accurately graded NM, the manufactured sound quality of this record is not the greatest. THE WHO

THE WHO - WHO'S ZOO: Trade Mark Of Quality TMQ W556, Double LP, 1974 (exact reissue date unknown), EX/EX (only played twice), Deluxe Series TMQ 62001 (two dots spine and label), Matrix #s W-556-A, B, C. D. Cheeseface label variant from the cover of the National Lampoon's January 1973 issue. William Stout color cover artwork with a black & white drawing on back. 32 listed tracks from 1964 (The High Numbers I'm The Face/Zoot Suit single) to 1971 (When I Was A Boy). Most of these songs were legitimate 45, EP, LP, and B-Side releases that were rare at the time in the U.S., so this album falls more under the "pirate" category than "bootleg." The seemingly unbanded Side 4 contains live TV broadcasts from Shindig (including Richmond Jazz Festival performances) and The Smothers Brothers Show. A couple songs have never seen legitimate releases, making this a "must have" for Who completists, plus you get "Waltz For A Pig," which you have to search outside The Who's catalog to pick up. The Bill Stout jacket cover is worthy of framing! See covers and labels  $99

A fascinating look at The Who using their own words. Divided into five sections (The Story, The Songs, Life At The Top, Fussin' And Fightin', Join Together In The Band), Clarke has assembled quotes from Pete, Roger, Keith, and John on each aspect of the band, taken from an extensive file of interviews and sources. Kenney Jones is briefly pictured and quoted on the subject of Keith Moon's death. This volume is loaded with B&W photos from their earliest days up to 1978. See covers  $25

THE WHO - WHO-LA-HOOP: Monomatapa Records 34-004, Double LP, 1979, VG to VG+ (vinyl manufactured this way)/VG (3 creases in front jacket), unknown country of origin with a London, England address on the jacket back, 17 songs listed. Front cover "Pedrito" painting by Fernando Botero. While the albums states "Philly 1980," it is not, as The Who did not play Philadelphia in 1980. Roger says "Hello Philadelphia," before Baba O'Riley and after Pete asks the crowd to welcome new members Jones and Bundrick, so the location and year is established. It is the December 10 or 11, 1979 concert recorded at The Spectrum in Philadelphia, PA. An audience recording of average boot quality with some tape speed problems. Played once, taped and stored away. The printed titles reflect the bootleg mentality of the time. Track list: Side One: Substitute, Can't Explain (sic, add an "I"), Teenage Wasteland (sic, Baba O'Riley), The Punk Meets The Godfather (sic, replace "Meets" with "And"), My Wife; Side Two: Sister Disco, Behind Blue Eyes, Music Must Change, Drowned; Side Three: Who Are You, 5:15, Pinball Wizard, See Me, Feel Me; Side Four: Long Live Rock, My Generation, I Can See For Miles, Won't Get Fooled Again. A fun collection of early music including The High Numbers recordings with studio chatter, BBC recordings - some differ from the released CD, outtakes from "The Who Sell Out" sessions, a Pete Townshend demo, and a few other rarities. You have to love the bootleg mentality of the time with the title manually stamped (in black or red) onto the album front cover. Also, the use (misuse) of Brunswick or Reaction, when neither label had anything to do with this record. The Reaction release of this has a different label and a slightly altered back cover. While the vinyl is accurately graded, the quality is of an "unofficial release." Track list: Side 1: Here 'Tis, Zoot Suit, I'm The Face, Good Lovin', Anyway Anyhow Anywhere, The Good's Gone, My Generation, Dancing In The Street, Summertime Blues; Side 2: Radio One (Happy Jack), Pictures Of Lily, My Favorite Station, It's Not True, I'm A Boy, Batman, Glow Girl, Top Gear (The Ox), Who The F*ck, Coke After Coke, and Hall Of The Mountain King. And in case you are wondering, the title track has appeared over the decades with a number of different names until The Who finally officially released it as "Sodding About." A number of commercial jingles recorded during the "Sell Out" sessions are banded on Side 1, but not track listed. 99% of the listings for this album DON'T mention these. Track list: Side One: My Favorite Station (My Generation) (not listed), Early Morning Cold Taxi, Radio One (Happy Jack) (not listed), Can't Tell A Note From a Symphony (sic, Girl's Eyes), Coke After Coke (not listed), Can't Explain (sic, add an "I"), Happy Jack, I'm A Boy, Top Gear (The Ox) (not listed), Don't Pretend You Know Me (sic, I Don't Even Know Myself); Side Two: That Glittering Girl (sic, drop "That"), Don't Look Away, Run Run Run, To Kill My Appetite (sic, drop "To"), Do The Strip. THE WHO LIVE AT FILMORE EAST 1968 COMPACT DISC: 1988, Living Legend Records, LLR-CD010, Opened/Like New: CD free of any marks, cover insert and inlay card as new, no cracks in case, no remainder holes or notching, import, made in Italy, O/P. Yes, it's "Fillmore," but if you no speak no good English, one L is close enough. For Who completists, this is the original factory created import CD, not a copy or non-commercial burn. While the cover claims the first 10 tracks are from the April 5th show, they are not. It's the April 6, 1968 performance, includes: Fortune Teller, Tattoo, Little Billy, Can't Explain (sic, add an I), Happy Jack, Relax, A Quick One While He's Away, My Way, Shakin' All Over, and Boris The Spider. The 5 bonus tracks are also not "Live at the Marquee Club, London, June 1964" as stated. They are from the September 1964 recordings made at the Scene Club or the Railway Hotel (depending upon who's story you believe) and are taken from the promotional film soundtrack shot there. These tracks include: Long Tall Shorty, Pretty Things (sic, Thing), Smokestack Lightning, Money, and Here This (sic, 'Tis). This disc appears to have been mastered from an original vinyl recording, so surface noise exists. Again, this long out of production CD is for Who collectors and completists (you know WHO you are). The poster is in a lightweight black wooden frame with plexiglass and a small plaque is on the bottom frame that simply reads "1970."  The frame measures 14 x 25 inches with roughly a 12.75 x 23.5 inch opening, so the poster is somewhere between there in size.
